Speed is of the essence when performing ABR tests on infant patients. The fact of the matter is, keeping a child still and quiet for an extended period of time is difficult without sedation, which comes with its fair share of risks. When using a click stimulus, only the 3000-4000 Hz region is activated. Because of those limitations, researchers have longed for a stimulus that triggers all desired frequencies of the basilar membrane at the same time.
In 2007, Interacoustics became the first company to introduce the innovative CE-Chirp® stimulus into a diagnostic evoked potentials platform, which led to reduced test times and easier interpretation for the clinician. The CE-Chirp® was hailed by researchers as the delay model that had the best match to the average human cochlea.
Among the many professionals that have had positive experiences with CE-Chirp® is Guy Lightfoot, PhD, a Consultant Audiological Scientist based in Liverpool, UK.
“Our work has shown that narrowband CE-Chirps® offer frequency-specific testing in typically half the time taken by tone pips,” said Lightfoot. “Given that a sleeping baby is a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, that’s an advantage you can’t afford to pass up. It’s frustrating that not all ABR systems offer this stimulus.”
The special acoustical construction of the Level Specific CE-Chirp® in the Interacoustics Eclipse EP25 provides response amplitudes up to twice the size (when compared to clicks or tone bursts). These special stimuli compensate for cochlear travel times, allowing for greater neural synchrony to be achieved by activating all frequencies simultaneously. This means hearing care professionals like you can get an ABR in half the time it takes using a click- or tone-evoked ABR.
Research with the CE-Chirp® over the past decade has shown that you can obtain estimated thresholds on infants in a matter of 15 to 20 minutes, with equal or better threshold estimates than traditional stimuli.
If you are running tests using the Natus/Otometrics Bio-logic® Navigator® PRO, be advised that production of this model will be discontinued at the end of 2018. As a result, repair parts will be more difficult to obtain. So now is the perfect time to bring CE-Chirp® technology to your practice!
Through December 31, 2018, you can trade in your Navigator PRO (Bio-Logic Navigation Pro Diagnostics Evoked Potential System 2nd Generation Silver Box) to your local e3 office and receive the Interacoustics ASSR software module for free with purchase the Eclipse EP25.
